Oil Cleanser Customized for Your Skin
I have always been a product junkie and was so excited when I discovered this simplistic, healthy and effective oil cleanser recipe for my face. It is customizable for your skin type and the ingredients are easy to find.
In high school, I suffered from oily skin with embarrassing cystic acne. This childhood history of “sensitive skin” was the catalyst for my quest to find a perfect skin care cleanser. I can recall a wide assortment of cleansers over the years including everything from expensive brand names to gentler “dermatologist approved” concoctions. None of these worked.
Eventually, when I was in college, I found an MD to prescribe Acutane. This powerful drug worked amazingly well. However, it did leave my skin sensitive and I was plagued with the fear that my horrible skin would return.
Fast forward to motherhood filled with a roller coaster of hormones and stress. My cystic acne thankfully never returned, but my skin has remained mine. It is now a combination of dry and oily with large pores, occasional pimples, black heads and a bit more character at my age. I still love products but have learned to appreciate knowing what is in the stuff I’m putting on my body.
Having teenage girls has further motivated me to discover products that are good for your body rather then absorbing a bunch of potentially harmful chemicals. My girls have also opened my eyes to a plethora of “you tubers” who talk about everything from making slime to taking care of your skin. Thankfully, we came across Sarah Nagel from Holistic Habits who has a channel devoted to healthy natural living with a large assortment of her favorite brands and home made products. Her story is inspiring and her beautiful hair and skin convince you that you need whatever she is using.
This video is the one that introduced me to the concept of oil cleansing. Sarah does an excellent job describing not only how to make the cleanser but also how to use it.
After watching this video, I found myself frequently pausing and taking screen shots of the ingredients she used. She describes choosing from a variety of oils to customize your cleanser to suit your individual needs.
I started researching several of the oils that she mentions in addition to a few more. I’ve created some printable infographics which describe the benefits of each of the oils listed. Download, print and/or share these so you can pull them out next time you are shopping for your new healthy oil cleanser ingredients. The basic recipe is also included at the end of this post.
HOW TO MAKE YOUR CUSTOM OIL CLEANSER
STEP 1 – Add 30% Castor Oil to your bottle
Make sure your castor oil is organic, cold-pressed and hexane-free. I found this one at a local market. It is also available HERE. I prefer to use the bottles that come with a dropper. You can use the ones with the pump too.
STEP 2 – Select a Carrier Oil and add 50% to your bottle
STEP 3 – Select a Specialty Oil and add 20% to your bottle
STEP 4 – Mix it up slowly by tipping the bottle back and forth
HOW TO USE YOUR CUSTOM OIL CLEANSER
STEP 1 – Massage 1/2 to 1 dropper of oil into your face
STEP 2 – Apply a warm towel to your face pressing it gently into your skin
STEP 3 – Gently wipe your face until it is soft and no longer oily
I have been using this oil cleanser for about one year now. I was surprised that my oily skin and large pores haven’t gotten more oily. It seemed counterintuitive to put oil on my oily skin. But it works! All of my makeup comes off and my skin is left clean and soft. I also love the fact that I can change it up by using different oils to suit my seasonal needs. 3-ingredient cleanser is SO much more comforting to me then an entire paragraph of random chemicals!
